Discover the privilege of sleeping on a boat

21 March 2024

You may have had the experience of going out sailing one day to discover the coast and the sea from another perspective. And renting a boat to visit beaches and coves that are inaccessible from land is a highly recommended plan. However, this time, we suggest completing this exclusive experience with something that goes beyond returning to port after sunset.

Have you ever slept on board a ship? Imagine lying in a hammock, seeing the moon reflected in the sea, falling asleep with the sway of the waves and watching the sun rise while you have breakfast in the stern of the boat... Let yourself go and discover this extraordinary experience in the best way with our recommendations.

Choose the place to rest well

Once you have chosen the boat that best suits your needs, the most important part we must choose is the place where we will sleep.

If we are at anchor and in port, the bow cabins are the best option since they are also the most quiet and away from busy areas such as the kitchen. In addition, they are usually the driest and best ventilated areas of the boat.

But in navigation, the bow moves a lot and in rough seas it is the worst place to be. During the voyage, the aft cabins and the central berths are more stable and do not receive as many blows; However, the engine is usually located in the stern and with it in gear, the noises and vibrations can be annoying. For this reason, the central bunk beds or the convertible lounge can be one of the best places to sleep.

Fighting the light is easier. We recommend that you take everything from the typical sleeping masks to curtains or opaque sheets that can be attached to the windows with a simple suction cup. In this case, the solutions are multiple.

Size matters

The size of the beds and bunk beds is very important, and on many boats anything is called a bed.

The bunk beds should have a width of about 60cm, since if they are smaller we will feel like mummies in a coffin. With more width it will also be more difficult to "fit in" and avoid rolling away (although there are anti-fall tarps that can be installed on any bed). The length of the bed is also very important. It should be at least 10 centimeters taller than the height of whoever intends to sleep.

Mattresses and mats also have their importance. If they are very thin we will have the sensation of sleeping on a plank and if they are very thick we will sink. With 7 to 12 centimeters thick in a relatively light foam of about 25 kg/m3 we will have a good resting base, suitable for any bed.

Finally, let's not forget the past! These must be comfortable since we will need them to stand up.

Aerate the environment

Aeration is another important point, even in winter, where everything tends to be closed, preventing air renewal and favoring the condensation of the vapor that we give off through our lungs during night breathing.

In summer it is natural to leave everything open so that the breeze cools us, as long as we don't have... Mosquitoes! Anchored in the coves it is not normal to find them, but in port they are very likely to appear. Therefore, I did not forget the anti-mosquito lotion or a good insecticide. Another good option, if you can, is to make some mosquito nets.

Be careful with the cold

The sleeping bag is a widely used solution. Do not hesitate to take a good quality one since at sea and at night, except in specific months or areas, it is really cold. If we are going to sleep, even just for a few hours, it is advisable to change and wear the dry clothes that we plan to wear to bed.

Taking off your boots or sneakers and going to sleep is a mistake, since with sleep our body temperature drops and the slight humidity that our clothes had will leave the body cold and very uncomfortable.

After all these recommendations we can only encourage you to share this experience with whoever you want most. With a small group of friends, as a couple or alone if you want to add silence to the adventure. Either way, we are sure that fun is guaranteed!
